The bridge on County Route 609 (Church Street/Yardville-Groveville Road) will be closed on March 22 and traffic will be detoured for about eight months so that the necessary demolition and reconstruction work can be performed.
New Jersey Department of Transportation officials on Monday announced a bridge superstructure replacement project on County Route 609 (Church Street/Yardville-Groveville Road) over all lanes of Route 130 in Hamilton Township, Mercer County. NJDOT’s contractor, Berto Construction, Inc., will begin preliminary construction activity this week including the installation of temporary safety shielding underneath the bridge, requiring periodic single-lane closures on Route 130. Then on Friday night, March 22, the contractor is scheduled to close and detour the CR 609 bridge for approximately eight months to perform the necessary demolition and reconstruction work. New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner James Simpson wants residents and elected officials to weigh in quickly on the conceptual plan to ease traffic along Route 1 in West Windsor and Plainsboro. "If we can get this (project) into the (federal transportation) program, if everyone buys into it, it will be a Herculean task," Simpson said. "So the message that I want to deliver to everybody here is get on board quickly or say no quickly." Both westbound lanes of the I-195 overpass across the NJ Turnpike in Robbinsville will be reopened by Wednesday morning, New Jersey DOT Commissioner James Simpson announced on Tuesday. This restores all four travel lanes on the overpass, two in each direction. The lanes will remain open until traffic can be shifted to a new overpass, which is expected to be complete in about two months. The DOT closed the outer westbound travel lane on the overpass two weeks ago after a truck traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike crashed and burned directly under the overpass. In what seems to be a growing movement against the Route 1 jughandle closures, a resident of Penns Neck in West Windsor has launched an online petition asking the New Jersey Department of Transportation to end the 12-week pilot program. The closures- which prohibit drivers from turning left off Route 1 north at Washington Road and Harrison Street- aim to reduce congestion along Route 1 north through Lawrenceville, West Windsor and Plainsboro. If the trial- which began in early August- is a success, the state plans to close jughandles permanently. DOT Spokesman says issues are being addressed, but no problems are so big they would end the pilot program.
Despite Assemblyman Reed Gusciora’s call on Tuesday to end the Route 1 jughandle closure pilot program, a NJ DOT spokesman said there are no plans to do so. I work in the area, I have almost been hit 3 times, that is when it has become illegal to turn around in someones driveway! Just yesterday the school bus had the red lights, a child was crossing the street and jumped back, someone making a turn. It won't change until someone is killed..... more ›
