Lawrence Township’s property revaluation began in February and, over the course of the next several months, personnel from Professional Property Appraisers will be visiting each and every property in the township to conduct inspections of both the interiors and exteriors of all buildings in order to properly appraise the properties. To help residents verify the identities of the appraisers before allowing them into their homes, the township has posted on its website copies of the photo identification cards carried by Professional Property Appraisers’ “field representatives.” Copies of these photos can be found here and here, and also in the Patch media box to the right. I was home today when the appraiser came by. He was in and out of the house in 5 minutes. He was wearing a jacket with the company logo and had a photo ID and was carrying a computer-tablet. He was very nice; asked me to show him the house, just counted bed/bathrooms, gave the dog a pat and was on his way. Easy!   more ›

I have lived through a previously reval in another NJ municipality and it was not done like this. I don't see how it's possible even for 3/4 of a $1 million to thoroughly inspect each residence inside and out. Further it seems like a total waste of taxpayer money to do individual inspections on income contingent/affordable housing units because their retail value is set by formula and no …   more ›

Council's Decision About 2013 Layoffs Needed Soon

In order to maximize the savings that would result from downsizing the township's workforce, a decision about layoffs for 2013 needs to be made in time for their Nov. 8 meeting, Lawrence Township Council members were recently told by the township manager.

Time is running out for members of the Lawrence Township Council to decide if the township administration should proceed with certain cost-cutting proposals – including layoffs – in order to balance the 2013 municipal budget. During their meeting last week (Tuesday, Oct. 16) council members were advised by Township Manager Richard Krawczun that the question about layoffs was particularly pressing and a decision needs to be made in time for the next council meeting on Nov. 8 (a deviation from council’s normal meeting schedule because of the presidential election being held on Nov. 6).  Discussion of that looming deadline came after Krawczun told council that the administration was “still working on various budget matters” for 2013. As part …

2013 Municipal Budget Problem: What to Do?

Lawrence Township Manager Richard Krawczun during the most recent township council meeting offered a “recap” of the potential cost-cutting and revenue-increasing proposals that have so far been discussed to solve the township's budget cap overage problem.

With the township still needing to cut more than $700,000 from its 2013 municipal budget in order to comply with the state’s 2 percent tax levy cap and time running out to make a decision on how best to do that, Lawrence Township Manager Richard Krawczun during the last township council meeting, on Sept. 18, offered a “recap” of the potential cost-cutting and revenue-increasing proposals that have been discussed so far. Krawczun also spoke at length about a new proposal whereby the township could possibly generate as much as $400,000 per year by charging each residential property owner in town a “flat fee” of $55 for the pickup of bulk trash items like furniture and old appliances. “My conversation on the 2013 budget this evening is more …

It frustrates me that so many people can make these great argruments on The Patch yet there was only one person who spoke out against an annual fee for bulk pickup at the Council meeting. You have a voice, use it. It worked when the voters defeated a 17% property tax hike, it can work again. The next Council meeting is on Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. Tell them you oppose a bulk garbage fee.   more ›

Twp. Ratables Take $7.8 Million Hit from Tax Appeals

Lawrence Township’s tax base has dropped another $7.8 million as a result of 164 appeals filed with the Mercer County Board of Taxation earlier this year by property owners.

Lawrence Township’s tax base has dropped another $7.8 million as a result of 164 appeals filed with the Mercer County Board of Taxation earlier this year by property owners, Township Manager Richard Krawczun announced during the Lawrence Township Council meeting held last week (Sept. 18). As a result, the township will have to pay out a total of over $353,000 in cash refunds or tax credits to those property owners whose appeals to the county board were successful, Krawczun said, noting that under the law the township is responsible for paying back not just the municipal share but also the school district and county shares of the taxes due to be refunded. Refunds will come from the township's surplus fund, he said. The total tax assessment …
