Sure, school is back in session, but the kids don't have to be the only ones hitting the books this month.
Although Labor Day marks the last hurrah for white pants, barbeques and kids up late on a Sunday night, it is not the end of the season. People, until the clock strikes midnight on Sept. 21, it's still summer. And that means there's just enough time to squeeze in another good book atop your favorite lounge chair. Not sure what to read for your last hurrah of summer? Fear not, we've cobbled together some best-sellers from The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, along with a few staff favorites from summers past. All you need to make your experience complete is a nice cold glass of iced tea lemonade. Fiction Non-fiction Be sure to tell us in your comments about your favorite summer read.

Jenkinson's Aquarium's new penguin exhibit is nearly five times larger than old one
Penguins need their space too and now they have nearly five times as much at Jenkinson's Aquarium. Jenkinson's recently completed a renovation and expansion of the penguin exhibit at the aquarium on the boardwalk, the first major renovation since the aquarium opened in 1991, said Aquarium Director Cindy Claus. Claus, who has worked at the aquarium for 21 years, having started as a curator, said the square footage has increased from 119 to 500 and the pool space has been increased from 1,100 gallons to 4,200. How did the aquarium make more room for the penguins and their pool? "We moved all of the life support into the basement," Claus explained. The "life support" includes machinery that creates ultra-violet light, keeps air and water …

Editor's Note: The following is the third in a series of news releases from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection about locally popular state parks in New Jersey. The series will highlight aspects of these parks such as recreational activities, natural history that residents of other parts of the state may not be aware of, as well as volunteers and employees who make these places special. A light breeze rustles tall saltmarsh grasses on Cheesequake Creek as kayakers peer at marsh wrens through binoculars. Diamondback terrapins sun themselves on logs and rocks, while tiny fiddler crabs peek out from the muddy banks. This bucolic scene may seem like a distant destination from the beaten path. But in reality, the subtle and …

The story behind one of many beachcombers' favorite shades of sea glass

By Graelyn Brashear Sea glass might have man-made origins, but it’s the ocean — the ceaseless beat of waves and corrosive and erosive natures of salt and sand — that renders shards lovely. That’s my justification, anyway, for tackling the subject in what’s primarily a nature column. The lovely litter can be found in all kinds of colors. We’ll just focus on one popular color today, cobalt blue, and leave the rest of the rainbow for another day. What it looks like: Cobalt blue glass is that deep, intense, royal blue shade that stands out strikingly among pieces of other, gentler hues. The color comes from cobalt oxide, an additive glassmakers love because its high melting point means it’s hard to disrupt the compound when melting and re-…

Hotdogs, hamburgers, police dogs and a fire engine were just some of the attractions on hand during Lawrence Township’s annual observance of National Night Out on Tuesday.
Lawrence Township’s annual observance of National Night Out – America’s so-called “night out against crime” – took place on Tuesday (Aug. 7) at Heritage Park, adjacent to the Eggerts Crossing Village complex at 175 Johnson Ave. The free event was open to the entire township to encourage community engagement and promote crime and drug prevention. While members of the township police department grilled up hotdogs and hamburgers for the crowd to enjoy, members of groups like Every Child Valued, the Lawrence Township Alcohol & Drug Alliance and Princeton HealthCare System handed out informational materials. Children played basketball and enjoyed the park’s swings and slides. Among the highlights of the evening for the many children who …
