Reservations can be made online or in person at the Mercer County Park Commission's Events & Recreation Center at 1638 Old Trenton Rd., West Windsor.
Picnic reservations for Mercer County Park Commission sites will be accepted for the 2013 season beginning at noon on Feb. 19. The Park Commission operates five picnic areas throughout Mercer County. Interested parties should visit the Mercer County website for more information, including pictures and detailed amenities of each area as well as to make reservations starting at the prescribed date and time. Interested parties should have either a MasterCard or Visa card ready to make a reservation. Reservations will be made automatically on a first-come, first-served basis. A "deer management program" will be conducted in the Pole Farm section of Mercer Meadows Park in Lawrence and Hopewell townships, the Mercer County Park Commission announced on Tuesday. The program will run from Jan. 1 through Feb. 16, 2013, and deer will be "harvested" by bow only, according to a county-issued news release. The majority of the trails in the park will be closed to the public on hunting days; however, the Lawrence-Hopewell Trail and Twin Pines Trail will remain open to the public. "There will be 150-foot safety zones along these two trails to ensure the safety of park users on hunting days," the news release said. Grab a shovel and help the Mercer County Park Commission and Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space reclaim 40 acres of forestland in Hopewell Township. Volunteers are needed for a massive reforestation project that calls for planting more than 3,000 trees at the Hollystone Preserve this November. The 108-acre tract off Fiddlers Creek Road was preserved in 2010 by local land trusts and municipal government, creating a crucial link between the woods of Baldpate Mountain and Washington Crossing State Park. After spending the summer in North America, millions of migratory songbirds trickle southward each day in the fall to escape the approaching Northern winter. On Saturdays between Oct. 6 and Oct. 20, the public is invited to join Assistant Mercer County Naturalist and avid birder Tyler Christensen on visits to some local birding hotspots to witness the spectacular fall migration of summer songbirds. The Mercer County Park Commission and Friends for the Marsh are seeking volunteers for a habitat improvement project that calls for planting native trees and shrubs in John A. Roebling Memorial Park in early October. Located just outside the City of Trenton, the Roebling Park section of the Abbott Marshlands is part of the Delaware River’s freshwater tidal marsh ecosystem. A section of the park that was once overgrown with invasive plants has now been cleared and is ready for planting. Volunteers will plant native wildflowers and shrubs that were purchased from the D&R Greenway’s native plant nursery. About 100 plants will be put in the ground. …

The Mercer County Park Commission is seeking enthusiastic, outdoor-loving individuals to volunteer during the County’s Baldpate Nature Camp. Volunteers will assist in leading the campers through daily explorations, hikes, experiments and games, in addition to other camp-related duties. The schedule includes fishing, insect catching and identification, birdwatching, orienteering, microscope lab, animal tracking, and many other nature- and ecology-themed activities. Its about time they got this plan going. I have been deer hunting close to the perimeter of the park property for years and each year I see more and more deer. Most of them are being hit by cars and run off to die in the woods and go to waste.
