Lawrence Middle School eighth-grader James Gow qualified to compete in the state round of competition for National History Day (NHD), which will be held at William Paterson University on May 4. During NHD's regional round held at The College of New Jersey on March 3, Gow's website on Martin Luther was selected from among eighteen other websites submitted from nine New Jersey counties in the Junior Individual Website Division (grades 6-8). The 2013 National History Day theme is "Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events." Thanks, in part, to the projected costs to the school district of the federal Affordable Healthcare Act that will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014, Lawrence Township's 2013-2014 school tax rate increase is now 1½ cents higher than initially announced.
The tax rate to support Lawrence Township’s public schools for the 2013-2014 school year will climb to $2.43 per $100 of assessed value – an increase of about 7½ cents over the current school year – under the proposed budget sent last week by the township board of education to Mercer County’s executive county superintendent of education for review. That $67.5 million spending plan included changes made to an earlier draft of the budget that was discussed in detail at the Lawrence Township Board of Education meeting held on Feb. 13. Lawrence Middle School eighth-grader Abagail Cohen received notification recently of her selection to attend the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth's (CTY) challenging programs for academically-gifted second- through twelfth-graders this summer. Abagail qualified for the program by participating in CTY's Annual Talent Search. During the search advanced young learners take above-grade level tests designed for older students as a means of gaining insight into their abilities. The Feb. 13 event raised about $2,000 for the American Heart Association

This national event was first founded in 1978 by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Healthy Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD). This life-saving educational program has provided millions of dollars to help individuals who are suffering with cardiovascular disease. The fundraising program encourages all participants to live heart healthy lives by eating well and engaging in physical activity. Ben Franklin Elementary School graduates Kayla Krisak, Olivia Waaben, Melissa Rothenberg, Sarah Tennant, Madeline Kemo, Gwyneth Lavery and Lisa Smith served as mentors to the BF Kids Care after-school program. The girls, who now attend Lawrence Middle School, helped 25 kindergartners and first-graders create friendship bracelets for patients at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Supervising teacher Mrs. Krisak said the girls were "amazingly patient and wonderful with the little ones" and she can't wait to work with them again. Show in the photo are Gwyneth Lavery and a Ben Franklin student.
The fourth annual event featured a total of 99 projects presented by 141 students from Lawrence Intermediate School and Lawrence Middle School.

Held Feb. 23 at Lawrence Intermediate School (LIS), the 4th annual Lawrence Science & Engineering Fair hosted 99 projects presented by 141 LIS and Lawrence Middle School (LMS) students. Awards were presented for each grade level. Lawrence High School (LHS) STEM students mentored fair participants and provided hands-on demonstrations. Resources and financial support for the fair were provided by Lawrence Township Public Schools; PTOs from LIS, LMS, and LHS; and Rider University. Myles Mitchell-White, a basketball player at Lawrence Middle School, accumulated one of the highest point totals in recent LMS history by totaling 524 points during his two-year middle school basketball career! He scored 234 points in seventh grade and 290 points in eighth grade.

The Lawrence High School Theater Company will present "Oklahoma!" on March 7, 8, and 9 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Lawrence High School, 2525 Princeton Pike. In anticipation of the show, the school district on Monday released the above video teaser. “Oklahoma!” – Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first musical – tells the story of cowboy Curly McLain and his romance with farm girl Laurey Williams. A special meeting of the Lawrence Township Board of Education will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, March 5, beginning at 7 p.m. in the library of Lawrence High School, 2525 Princeton Pike, for the purpose of the board authorizing the proposed 2013-2014 school district budget to be sent, as required, to Mercer County’s executive county superintendent of education for review.
