Historian Unearths Lawrence's Revolutionary Heroes

During the Lawrence Historical Society's annual Mary Tanner Lecture Sunday, historian Larry Kidder spoke about the farmers, blacksmiths and tavern owners from Maidenhead - as Lawrence was then known - who helped America win independence from the British.

With soured dispositions spelled across their weathered faces and inadequate food supplies to sustain them, citizens-turned-soldiers trudged along the muddy, rain-soaked road – now, more than two centuries later, known as Lawrence Road or Route 206 – as they went to face what was then the greatest fighting force on the planet. They were ordinary men – farmers, blacksmiths and tavern owners, many from Maidenhead, as Lawrence Township was then known – who set aside their families, shops and harvests to defend our developing nation against the British army during the Revolutionary War. The stories of these men and their sacrifices were highlighted during the Lawrence Historical Society's annual Mary Tanner Lecture presented by historian Larry…

Events Will Celebrate Lawrence Township History Month

The Lawrence Historical Society’s annual lecture - this year focusing on citizen-soldiers from Lawrence who took part in the American Revolution - will be given Oct. 14. On Oct. 27 another event called “People, Places, and Periods” will take place.

October is traditionally recognized locally as Lawrence Township History Month, with a variety of events planned to celebrate the township’s rich past. This year is no different, with two special events planned. Township Historian Dennis Waters appeared before township council at its meeting Tuesday evening (Oct. 2) to discuss the two upcoming events. The Lawrence Historical Society’s annual Mary Tanner Lecture will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, at Rider University. Entitled “Maidenhead Patriots,” the lecture by local historian  Larry Kidder will focus on citizen-soldiers from Maidenhead – as Lawrence Township was originally called – who took part in the American Revolution. “As you know, at the time of the revolution Lawrence …

Hogmanay Bonfire: Saying Goodbye to 2011

Annual event by the Lawrence Historical Society bids farewell to the old year and welcomes the new year.

Thanks, in part, to the decent weather and the absence of snow of the ground, hundreds of people turned out Saturday, Dec. 31, to the Lawrence Historical Society's Hogmanay Bonfire in the meadow next to the historic Brearley House to bid farewell to 2011 and welcome 2012. The bonfire has been a tradition for the Lawrence Historical Society since 1997. Hogmanay is a Scottish New Year's Eve tradition at which participants celebrate the arrival of the new year and cleanse themselves of all the bad experiences of the previous year. One of the ways Hogmanay participants do this is by writing a list of the bad things from the past year that they want to forget. On Saturday, bonfire attendees were invited to toss their lists into the flames so …
