Down the Shore: Firemen's Fair, 'Xanadu,' Flying History Tour

Heading down to the Shore? Check out this weekend's best bets:  The annual Fair Haven Firemen's Fair, billed as the largest in New Jersey, returns Friday night. There will be rides and food, and of course, rides on firetrucks. The fair, held at the firehouse on River Road, runs through Sept. 1, excluding Sundays. The Ocean City Theatre Company's Junior Company will present the Broadway musical "Xanadu" at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday on the Ocean City Music Pier. The Music Pier will be transformed into a roller disco complete with special lighting, projections, a disco ball and a cast of singing, dancing, acting and skating youths from across the greater Ocean City area. Tickets …

Down the Shore: Bike Race, Boardwalk Pageant, Festival of the Sea Carnival

Heading down to the Shore? Check out this weekend's best bets: Hundreds of cyclists will race Fair Haven's streets Sunday for the fourth annual Tour de Fair Haven competition, featuring six races in a 1.7-mile enclosed course. Cyclists will compete for $10,000 in prizes, and proceeds from the event benefit the Fair Haven Foundation. The race starts at 7 a.m. at the Fair Haven firehouse on River Road. Check out this weekend's best bets: The Monmouth County Fair continues this weekend at the East Freehold Showgrounds in Freehold Township. Rides, music, food and 4-H exhibits are just among the attractions at the showgrounds, with $7 admission (kids younger than 12 free). A former Asbury Park councilwoman wants an old ordinance enforced on the boardwalk. Is she right?

Next time you go to the beach in Asbury Park, you may need to cover up before you enter the boardwalk. Last week, Louise Murray, a former Asbury Park councilwomen and the current chairperson of the city’s Republican Party, spoke during the town’s council meeting to raise the issue of a long forgotten ordinance still on the books. The ordinance, enacted in 1958, states that “no person clad in bathing attire shall be on the boardwalk or the public walks adjacent thereto.” “I’ll be darned if I want to be standing at a bar and have somebody slither up in a Speedo or bikini that shouldn’t be in a bathing suit,” Murray said, according to the Asbury Park Sun. “It’s disgraceful … I implore you to enforce this, but do not amend it.” The ordinance, …

Phew. After a couple of scorchers, the weather should be more manageable this weekend, just in time to head to the beach. If you're looking for something to do after you come off the sand, check out this weekend's best bets: Metal giant Metallica will bring its Orion Music + More festival to Bader Field in Atlantic City this Saturday and Sunday. The legendary band will be joined by New Jersey's own Gaslight Anthem and Titus Andronicus, as well as Sepultura, Modest Mouse, Eric Church and more.
