Mantoloking among stops
Prince Harry's stateside visit includes stops in Mantoloking and Seaside Heights scheduled for tomorrow. The May 14 itinerary, announced earlier this month, puts the British royal on the barrier island visiting Hurricane-Sandy damaged areas. The one-day stop in New Jersey will have Gov. Chris Christie escorting Prince Harry, who is in the United States through this week. His schedule has him arriving in Manhattan today after stops in the Midwest. Prince Harry’s Friday itinerary included laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery last week. The beachfront tourist attraction's aquarium and gift shop will be open; arcades will reopen Saturday
Parts of Jenkinson's Boardwalk will reopen Friday as the Point Pleasant Beach tourist attraction continues to recover from Hurricane Sandy. The aquarium, as well as the aquarium gift shop and sweet shop will reopen Friday, while the pavilion's fast food will be available on weekends only beginning Saturday. The Jenkinson's South arcade, the arcade at Jenkinson's Pavilion and Frank's Fun Center will also open Saturday, according to the business's website. Jenkinson's and other boardwalk-based businesses have been workng on rebuildng and refurbishing the area while dealing with Point Beach's crumpled boardwalk. Volunteer April Readlinger is collecting discarded Christmas Trees to help rebuild the beach dunes in Berkeley Township.
Getting rid of your Christmas tree? Now it can go to a good cause. Princeton resident April Readlinger is spearheading a local effort to collect old trees and take them to the Jersey Shore where they will be used to rebuild dunes destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. The project started about a week ago, after Readlinger saw a Facebook post about Berkeley resident Dominick Solazzo’s initiative to stack old Christmas trees along a one-third mile stretch of beach at the south end of South Seaside Park, a section of Berkeley Township located just south of Seaside Park Borough. Solazzo is a member of the board of directors of a homeowners' association there. Readlinger shared Solazzo’s efforts on her Facebook page and offered to pick up trees locally…

By Ralph Izzo, NJ Spotlight In wreaking devastation across New Jersey, superstorm Sandy challenged us more than any other natural disaster in PSEG’s 109-year history. We have faced many daunting storms before, but Sandy exceeded them all in size and destructive fury. Over a two-week period our employees, assisted by thousands of workers from 24 states and Canada, made more than 2.1 million electric service restorations -- a record for any utility in the country. About 48,000 trees had to be removed or trimmed and 2,400 utility poles repaired or replaced. On top of this, Sandy left us with a massive rebuilding task. We estimate the costs of restoring our distribution and transmission system at $250 million to $300 million as a result of …

Limited access allowed today; full access on Jan. 7
Seaside Heights announced that it's ready to move forward with the following plan/schedule that will allow limited access to the beachfront community, according to the town's website. Anyone is allowed into Seaside Heights, without being stopped by officers at the bridge or at any entry points, from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. Any retail/entertainment businesses can be open during these same hours. "Let people come and go whether they’re here to work or just coming over to get a bite to eat," the website says. Full access will be allowed Jan. 7. At any time by anyone, businesses can be open from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m., and people can live in any units that are ready. Also:

Legislators get tour of Shore destruction
Members of New Jersey's General Assembly toured Ocean County communities devastated by Superstorm Sandy Thursday (Nov. 29). The tour, led by State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes, along with local officials, gave lawmakers and members of the press an up-close look at what Sandy left behind – including the remnants of the Seaside Heights boardwalk and the now-iconic Jet Star roller coaster, which dropped from Casino Pier to the ocean during the storm. Casino Pier will be repaired in what is estimated to be a $45 million project, Seaside Heights Police Chief Thomas Boyd said, and the roller coaster will be removed from the ocean floor. Heading down the Shore? Check out this weekend's best bets: The "Jazz It Up Wine & Food Festival" will be held at historic Allaire Village in Wall Township this weekend. The event will feature more than 300 varieties of wine from more than two dozen wineries. The festival, which runs from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, also will feature live music, vendors and crafters. Tickets for wine sampling are $25 for those 21 years and older. Final season will begin airing in October
Love or hate its rambunctious cast, the show that made Seaside Heights famous - or, at least, infamous - is going off the air. MTV announced Thursday afternoon its hit series "Jersey Shore" will end after a recently-taped season airs this fall. The sixth season of the series, which since 2009 has chronicled the oft-drunken misadventures of eight 20-somethings living in a house on Ocean Terrace in Seaside Heights, will premier Oct. 4 at 10 p.m., but when the season ends, it will not return. The network will air "Gym, Tan, Look Back" as part of a farewell marathon Sept. 6, and the cast will make an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards that night.
