Holiday Hostess Gifts

Wondering what to bring to your next holiday party? Me too! Here are some ideas.

What should I bring to the party for the hosts? This is a question I ask myself before every party we go to. I usually opt for a bottle of wine because it’s easy and most people like to serve it and drink it. Did you bake any cookies yet? Baked goods are a perfect hostess gift during the holiday season. I haven’t baked yet this year but when I do, I will definitely be packing cookies wherever we go. One year, I picked up a bunch of reasonably priced holiday dishes so I could make pretty platters of cookies to give to friends who had us over for parties. I often give chocolates too. I love the Hershey’s Pot of Gold box of chocolates. You can buy it at the supermarket and it’s a little fancier than normal candy bars. Of course, it is nice to…

Event Gives Children With Special Needs Chance to Meet Santa

The “Caring Santa” event at Quaker Bridge Mall on Sunday, Dec. 9, will provide a “subdued environment” that will, it is hoped, make it easier for children with special needs pose for a holiday photo with Santa.

This Sunday Quaker Bridge Mall will host a special event intended for parents and caregivers who have a child with special needs who would like their loved one to pose for a photo with Santa but are concerned that the experience of going to a loud, crowded venue to do so might be overwhelming. From 8 to 10 a.m. on Dec. 9 at the mall in the 3300 block of Route 1 (Brunswick Pike) in Lawrence Township the “Caring Santa” event will provide a “subdued environment” that will, it is hoped, make things a bit easier for such families to get that holiday snapshot with Father Christmas. Caring Santa has been developed by the mall’s owner, Simon Property Group Inc., and is guided by AbilityPath.org, a national online resource hub and special needs …

Santa Will Reply to Letters from Children

Thanks to a very special U.S. Postal Service program, "Santa" will reply to children who mail him their Christmas wish lists this holiday season.

Every year, millions of children sit down to make a wish list for Santa, hoping he will make all of their Christmas dreams come true. But what if Santa actually wrote back? The U.S. Postal Service is now accepting "Letters From Santa," a program that allows any person to play Santa by sending a letter signed by Saint Nick to any child. According to a postal service news release, "The 'Letters From Santa' program helps parents fulfill the dreams of their own children." Instructions to send a letter from Santa: You can also mail your letter from Santa directly to your home from your local post office if you don't need a North Pole postmark.

When Does Hanukkah 2012 Start?

The Jewish holiday begins a little early this year.

Mark your calendars for the 25th day of the month of Kislev. That's when Hanukkah starts in 2012. For those of us who aren't so tuned into the Jewish calendar, that translates to sundown on Saturday Dec. 8. The holiday, also called the Festival of Lights, lasts eight days. Hanukkah commemorates the story of the Maccabean Revolt against Syrian rulers in present day Israel 2,300 years ago. The Maccabees wanted to rededicate Jerusalem's main temple but had only enough oil to kindle the Eternal Light for one day.  Yet the oil lasted for eight, according to the story, and thus the holiday of Hanukkah was born. Today, Jews generally celebrate by gathering with family, lighting a menorah over the course of eight days, playing dreidel and eating …
