Dr. Kenneth E. Marshall, an associate professor of History at the State University of New York-Oswego, will deliver the 21st annual Emanuel Levine History Lecture, presented by the Department of History at Rider University, on Thursday, March 7, at 7 p.m. in the Sweigart Auditorium on Rider’s Lawrence Township campus at 2083 Lawrence Rd. The Delaware & Raritan Canal Watch will hold a light rail tour between Bordentown and Trenton on Saturday, Feb. 23, designed to take riders back to the 19th century. The NJ Transit River Line route follows the path of the D&R Canal from Crosswicks Creek to Trenton. See the abandoned canal, Watson's Creek and the Hamilton-Trenton-Bordentown Marsh. In the City of Trenton, where Route 129 is on the former path of the canal, remnants of the industrial and commercial buildings that lined the canal can be observed and compared with early photos. The Lawrence Historical Society will hold its annual meeting at 2 p.m. this Sunday, Feb. 24, at Lawrence High School. The meeting, which is free and open to the public, will feature a lecture about the development of the township's various neighborhoods presented by township historian Dennis Waters and Michael Siegel of the Rutgers University Geography Department. The Lawrenceville School's Bunn Library and Gruss Center of Visual Art have teamed to present a discussion of Abraham Lincoln, his legacy, and the 150th anniversary of the Civil War led by Pulitzer Prize winning historian James M. McPherson. The lecture, and a post-event reception, will take place on Feb. 12 at 3:30 p.m. in the Gruss' Hutchins Rotunda. All members of the public are invited to attend this free event. Guests are also encouraged to view the School's own collection of Lincoln memorabilia, selected from the Bunn Library's Stefan Archives, on display in the Gruss. The Delaware & Raritan Canal Watch will hold a free walking tour along one of the most rural sections of the canal park on Sunday, Jan. 13. The walk will explore the section of the canal between Griggstown and East Millstone, a distance of 5.6 miles. Participants will have the option of walking part way to Blackwells Mills, 3.5 miles. With snow forecast for Saturday, the 51st Annual Reenactment of the Col. Edward Hand Historic March has been rescheduled for Sunday, Dec. 30, beginning at 11 a.m. in the Lawrence Township Municipal Building (2207 Lawrence Rd.), township Superintendent of Recreation Steve Groeger announced on Thursday. Bill Agress will once again portray Col. Hand. and will lead Revolutionary War re-enactors, history buffs, township officials, boy scouts and local residents on a march along Route 206 to Trenton to recreate the historical events that took place on Jan. 2, 1777.
