School Safety Focus of Board of Education Meeting

The Dec. 14 murders of over two dozen children and educators at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., at the hands of a deranged gunman were, not surprisingly, on the minds of those who attended last week’s Lawrence Township Board of Education meeting. As concerned parents made suggestions and asked questions, board members and administrators offered reassurances that the safety of students and staff remains the school district’s top priority and that steps are being taken to improve security. One parent suggested that bullet-proof doors be installed at township schools, while another parent asked about having police officers in every school. School Safety a 'Top Priority,' LTPS Superintendent Says

It follows an earlier letter released by the school district on Dec. 14.   Dec. 17, 2012 Dear LTPS Community and Families: Thank you for sharing your concerns and suggestions in response to the Newtown, Connecticut, tragedy that unfolded last Friday. We are all deeply saddened and our thoughts continue to be with that community as they work through their grief. I can assure you that the safety of our students and staff is always a top priority. Editor's Note: The following letter was released this afternoon by Lawrence Township Public Schools.   Dec. 14, 2012 Hello Lawrence Township Families, It is with an extremely heavy heart that I write this note to you after the tragic elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, this morning that took the lives of at least 27 people. Details are still unfolding and we won’t know for some time exactly what happened. I want to assure you, however, that we will continue to enforce our safety and security procedures to make sure we are doing everything possible to keep our children safe. There is money in Lawrence Township to put Police Officers back into schools. An armed security guard would have given the vulnerable children of Sandy Hook School, at least a chance. Layoff police officers and you think you're saving money, but the door to things like this opens, when enforcement is absent.
