Ben Franklin School Garden SNAPs Into Shape

The outdoor classroom/garden will allow students and staff to have a flexible area to make observations or simply to read or think outside.

Editor's Note: The following news brief was submitted by Lawrence Township Public Schools. Ben Franklin Elementary School recently broke ground on an outdoor classroom/garden in the school's courtyard. Funded by a grant from the Lawrence Township Education Foundation and Ben Franklin's PTO, the project is entitled "Ben Franklin S.N.A.P. Space" for science, nature, arts, and pondering. The overall purpose of the space is to allow students and staff to have a flexible area to make observations or simply to read or think outside. The S.N.A.P. center is shaped like a kite and contains four beds of native New Jersey pollinating plants. LHS Senior Takes Part in Summer Sustainability Academy

Lawrence High School senior Josh Dutko attended the two-week Stockton Summer Sustainability and Environmental Academy at Richard Stockton College in July.

Back-to-School Checklist for Students with Asthma

This back-to-school season, the American Lung Association in New Jersey highlights tips for families of children with asthma and stresses the importance of crafting a plan to properly manage asthma in a school environment.

LTPS Switches Websites for Athletic Schedules

Lawrence Township Public Schools will now use the www.colonialvalleyconference.org website to post and update schedules for high school and middle school athletics for the 2012-2013 season.

It will now use www.colonialvalleyconference.org. All schedules for the 2012-13 season for Lawrence High School and Lawrence Middle School teams are posted and up to date. Distribution of Laptops to LTPS Students to Begin Soon

Parents of Lawrence Township Public School students entering sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth grades can now make appointments to pick up their child's laptop computer. Distribution will take place Aug. 13 through Aug. 29, excluding Fridays.

Jumpstarted by the Teaching and Learning with Essential New Technologies in the 21st Century (Talent 21) grant that Lawrence Township Public Schools received in 2010, the 1:1 mobile device initiative continues within the district. Beginning with the upcoming school year, LTPS expands the program to include Grade 9.  Parents of LTPS students entering sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth grades can now select a date and time to pick up their child's laptop. The dates of distribution will be Monday, Aug. 13, through Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, excluding Fridays, and there will be both afternoon and evening hours on most days. And another way for kids not to pay attention in class. Do you really need a laptop to teach chemistry, or simple math. No... I know its a grant but geez does this district throw away money like crazy. Smartboards were a HUGE fail watching a teacher play with the whole period trying to figure out how to use. If you believe your student(s) is eligible for the lunch program, a new application must be filled out every school year. Remember to complete one application per household and include on the application all relatives and non-relatives living in the household along with their gross income. School Board Hears Concerns About Special Education

Following the recent resignations of three key special education staff members, parents of children with special needs appeared before the Lawrence Township school board last week to voice their concerns about the district’s special education department.

Three parents of children with special needs appeared before the Lawrence Township Board of Education during last week’s special board meeting to express their concern about the leadership of the school district’s special education department. Melissa Hitzel, Andrea Pennington and Amanda Tulumalo told board members they are very worried about the future of special education in the district following the recent resignations of Carol Webb, Pam Hernandez, and Michael Donnelly. Webb, who was hired in July 2011 to serve as Lawrence Township Public Schools’ interim supervisor of special education, Grade 7 through graduation, resigned from the district in May to take a new job as director of the student services department in the Branchburg …

Where in the World are LTPS Staffers?

Some Lawrence Township teachers are busy this summer traveling the world teaching and taking part in missionary work.

Do you find yourself wondering what Lawrence Township Public School staff members are up to this summer? Well, here are just a few examples, as provided by the district. Alyssa Katz, Lawrence Middle School Spanish teacher, presented "Empowering Students to Manage Their Own Learning" at Alan November's Building Learning Communities conference held in Boston from July 17-20.
