While it’s only amounted to a few inches, the snow that fell this morning (Friday, March 8) – and, as of 10:30 a.m., was still falling in parts of Lawrence Township – certainly made for some treacherous driving conditions on some roads. Lawrence Township police have responded to multiple accidents involving vehicles sliding off roadways, including one in which a Mercer County Department of Transportation salt truck ended up on its side in a ditch on Carter Road near Tall Timbers Road. The accidents, which occurred on Bakers Basin Road and Keefe Road in Lawrence Township, occurred 12 hours apart Saturday.
Lawrence Township police, volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded to two separate traffic accidents involving overturned vehicles that happened 12 hours apart on Saturday, Dec. 22. The first accident, reported to police at 2:44 a.m., occurred on Bakers Basin Road near Basin Road when Christopher Wyche, 22, of Morton Court, Lawrence Township, lost control of his Nissan, according to Detective Sgt. Joseph Amodio, a township police spokesman. The Nissan flipped onto its side. Wyche, whose injuries were not of a life-threatening nature, was charged with driving under the influence and related offenses, Amodio said. The number of crashes at Route 1 and Bakers Basin Road/Franklin Corner Road has nearly doubled since the red light cameras were turned on there, according to police statistics, which also show over 9,000 tickets have been issued since November.
The number of motor vehicle collisions that occurred during the first 7½ months that the red light cameras were active at Route 1 (Brunswick Pike) and Bakers Basin Road/Franklin Corner Road was nearly double the number of accidents that happened there during a similar time period a year before the traffic enforcement system was installed at the busy Lawrence Township intersection, according to statistics provided by the township police department. Police said another driver from Princeton caused the accident when she lost control of her vehicle while driving on wet pavement around a sharp curve.
A 26-year-old Lawrence Township woman was taken by ambulance to the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro with an ankle injury, cuts and bruises on Thursday evening after her vehicle was struck head-on by another car that lost control on a curve along Cherry Valley Road, according to Montgomery Township Police. The sport utility vehicle overturned after its driver lost control while trying to pull to the right to make way for police cars responding to a fight at Quaker Bridge Mall.
A Trenton man and his passenger were injured when the sport utility vehicle in which they were traveling veered off the roadway and came to rest on its roof in the woods Sunday afternoon (Dec. 18), according to Lawrence Township police spokesman Lt. Lawrence Township volunteer firefighters had to extricate a man from the wreckage after the vehicle he was driving slammed into a utility pole on Denow Road this morning, Friday, Dec. 16. The accident occurred shortly before 7:30 a.m. on Denow Road, just west of Melvina Drive, when the 55-year-old driver lost control – reportedly because of a sneeze – and his vehicle veered off the road and slammed into the pole. The first arriving police officer found the driver trapped inside the vehicle which, having split the utility pole in half, had come to rest with its front driver’s side wheel resting atop the splintered base of the pole. At least two people were injured in a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 95 in Lawrence Township this morning, Monday, Nov. 28. The accident occurred about 11 a.m. along the southbound side of I-95 just prior to Exit 8B (Princeton Pike North). Both cars involved in the collision came to rest off the roadway, against the chain-link fence in the wooded area that separates the interstate from the Princeton Pike Corporate Center on Lenox Drive. Lawrence Township police are investigating a traffic accident on Brunswick Pike (Business Route 1) that sent a female pedestrian to the regional trauma center Saturday evening.
Update: On Nov. 21, Lawrence Township police identified the pedestrian who was injured in this accident as Joanne Fisher, 55, of the 1000 block of Brunswick Avenue, Trenton. A woman was badly injured when she was struck by a vehicle as she tried to walk across Brunswick Pike (Business Route 1) in Lawrence Township Saturday evening (Nov. 19). The woman, a 55-year-old Trenton resident whose name was being withheld pending notification of her family, suffered injuries that, while being serious in nature, are not believed to be life-threatening, according to Lawrence Township police.
