Dynamic duo help Cardinals improve to 9-3 on the year.
The Lawrence High School's boys lacrosse team was flying high at the end of April, winning five out of six contests to improve to 9-3 on the year, powered by the offensive exploits of Nick Bosted and Jacob Irizarry. On April 18, the Cardinals crushed Steinert by a score of 12-2. Bosted was a scoring machine, with seven goals and four assists in the win. Irizarry added four goals and an assist, while Patrick Kelly collected eight saves for LHS. LHS would follow up the blowout win with a tight victory over George (Pa.), by a score of 4-2 on April 20. Bosted was all the offense LHS would need, scoring all four Cardinal goals. Irizarry contributed two assists, while Kelly was a wall with 11 saves. In their next game on April 23, LHS would not …
The university's golf team shot 311 at the MAAC Conference Championships in Florida.
The Rider University golf team participated at the three-day Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships in Florida Friday through Sunday. After the final day of the 54-hole tournament, Rider placed seventh out of nine teams after shooting a 311. Rider opened with a 327 Friday and shot 314 on Saturday for a three-day total of 952, improving one shot and one place over the 2012 season. The Broncs had seven birdies, 54 pars, 19 bogeys, eight double bogeys and two triple bogeys in the third round. The 46 player tournament was held at Disney’s Palm Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., a par-72, 7,011 yard venue. For Rider, senior Evan McGrain (West Windsor/W. Girls district 12 Majors Softball West End-Trenton Lawrence-Eco Evolutions Despite the cold weather, the girls of Eco Evolutions played another skillful game. Adeline Ripberger pitched an immense game, with Juliette Harle as catcher and Madeline Zeleznik making some great defensive plays. The girls were able to hold onto the lead for the majority of the game and win! Cooperstown Baseball Lawrence Sharks (Miele) Miele’s Cooperstown League team the Lawrence Sharks is off to a great start for the 2013 baseball season. In their April 24game the Sharks worked together to field 3 outs in the top of the second inning. Golf team is tuning up for MAAC championships.
In the final tune up before the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships, the Rider University golf team finished seventh of 12 teams at the Metro Honda Peacock Invitational, hosted by Saint Peter’s University at the par 72, 7,016 yard Neshanic Valley Golf Club. Rider finished with a team score of 309. MAAC-rival Fairfield won the tournament (297) with Central Connecticut and Monmouth finishing in a tie for second place with a 301. For Rider, senior Evan McGrain (West Windsor/W. Windsor-Plainsboro South) tied for sixth place out of 63 golfers with a 73, finishing one shot out of the lead. Christian Hlewicki, a seventh-grader at Lawrence Middle School, selected as a 2012-2013 All-American Scholar by Pop Warner.
Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. has announced that Christian Hlewicki, current seventh-grader at Lawrence Middle School, has been selected as a 2012-2013 All-American Scholar. This honor places Christian academically in the top 2 percent of the approximately 400,000 children that take part in the Pop Warner Little Scholars’ spirit and football programs nationwide. Christian has been invited to attend the 53rd Annual All-American Scholar Banquet, taking place on Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25 in Boston. In November Christian was selected for the Eastern Regional team, he then went on to compete nationally for the top honors. The women's softball team came from behind to defeat the Leopards, Tuesday.
Despite being out-hit by the host Leopards, the Rider University softball team won a non-conference game at Lafayette College on Tuesday afternoon at Metzgar Fields. Trailing 2-1, Rider rallied with three runs in the top of the third inning, including an RBI double by freshman Kim Valdes (Jupiter, Fla./King's Academy) and an RBI triple from freshman Emily Cottrell (Beachwood/Toms River HS South), putting the Broncs back in the lead 4-2. Cottrell had two hits and three RBI in the game. The Leopards used three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to plate two runs, cutting the deficit to 5-4. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference will add field hockey as an associate sport sponsored by the conference, with league play beginning in the 2013-14 academic year. "We are happy and excited that the MAAC will be sponsoring field hockey beginning next fall," said head coach Lori Hussong who has led Rider to the NEC playoffs in all 13 of her seasons at Rider. "Our student-athletes are looking forward to competing under our true conference flagship. Junior Kehli Washington (Lulea, Sweden/New Rochelle) of the Rider University softball team was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week, it was announced last week. Washington was recognized for all games April 8-14. Washington batted .615 in five games the week before for Rider with eight runs scored and six walks for an on-base percentage of .737. and she handled all 15 chances in the field without an error. For the season, Washington has started all 38 games and leads the team in hitting (.388), runs scored (30), hits (45) and stolen bases (20).
