Varsity Softball Team Fights to Save Coach's Job

Lawrence High School varsity softball players appeared before the Lawrence Township school board Monday (May 14) to speak out against the school administration’s decision not to renew the contract of their coach, Tara Harrigan.

Members of the Lawrence High School varsity softball team appeared before the Lawrence Township Board of Education at the board’s meeting Monday night (May 14) to speak out against the school administration’s decision not to renew the contract of their coach, Tara Harrigan. Harrigan, a physical education teacher at Lawrence High School, was hired in January 2011 to fill the position left vacant by the retirement of Len Weister, who spent 38 years working in Lawrence Township schools, according to district officials. “We recently found out that Tara Harrigan, a gym teacher and our softball coach, was not asked to return next school year,” Amanda Toto said after she and her teammates walked up to the podium during one of the meeting’s public…

This "last hired, first fired" policy is terrible. After reading the letter, seeing the support of this team and watching the coach speak on the linked YouTube video, LHS will be missing one motivating, energetic educator. We need more teachers like this. Hopefully, Harrigan will not let this get in her way and some other lucky School district will be happy to have her.   more ›

Poll: Devils or Rangers This Time Around?

With visions of 1994 dancing in metropolitan fans' heads, who do you think will win?

It isn't always pretty. In fact, it rarely is. When the two top ice hockey squads in the New York-New Jersey metro area lace them up, it's always a spectacle. But it's never more so than when the matchups come in the playoffs. Of course, we're talking about the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers (sorry Islanders fans, but the '80s are behind us). The two NHL teams began their best-of-seven Eastern Conference Finals series Monday night as the Rangers shut the Devils out 3-0 to claim game one. Of course, most fans remember the last time these two faced each other for that right. It was 1994. For Rangers fans, it was the precursor to a fantastic Stanley Cup championship victory over the Vancouver Canucks and the end of the "1940" …

Poll: Are Kids Getting Priced Out of Baseball and Softball?

A New York Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them."
