A private preparatory boarding high school, one of the oldest of its kind in the United States, the Lawrenceville School was founded in 1810 as the Maidenhead Academy. The school underwent several name changes before it was rededicated as The Lawrenceville School in 1883. The school is located on 700 acres situated between Route 206 (known alternately as Main Street or Lawrence Road) and Lewisville Road. The campus features more than 30 large academic buildings and residence halls, as well numerous athletic fields and a nine-hole golf course.

Students come to The Lawrenceville School from all over the United States and from dozens of countries throughout the world. The school was all-male, until 1987 when the first girls were admitted. Students in grades 9 through 12 live in dormitories that have distinct identities similar to the house system at many British boarding schools. Each year, students from the school's different houses compete against each other in what is one of the oldest football leagues in the United States.

Governors, famous authors, artists, athletes, corporate CEOs and even a Saudi Arabian prince are among The Lawrenceville School's more notable alumni.

Enrollment for the 2010-11 school year was a total of 815 boarding and day students. Average tuition for boarding students was $46,475, while day student tuition was $38,050.
