Rider Drops One to La Salle

The softball team will play again Saturday at the university.

Despite out-hitting the host Explorers seven to five, the Rider University softball team lost at La Salle University 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Tied 1-1, La Salle hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and used an RBI double and RBI single in the sixth inning for the final score.

Rider (8-39) took a 1-0 first inning lead when freshman Emily Cottrell (Beachwood/Toms River HS South) hit an RBI ground out with the bases loaded, scoring sophomore Allysen Breeden (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) who singled with one out.

Breeden had two of Rider’s seven hits and also walked, reaching base for the seventh game in a row.

The Explorers tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly.

Freshman Ali Meagher (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) only gave up five hits but took the loss for Rider, going six innings and allowing five runs, all earned.

Also for the Broncs, junior Kehli Washington (Lulea, Sweden/New Rochelle) collected her team-leading 54th hit of the season and 140th hit in her career, 25th best all-time at Rider.

Sophomore Lauren Davies (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) also had two hits for Rider.

Rider and La Salle last met in 2009 with the Broncs winning the opener 6-3 and La Salle taking the night cap 8-0 in games played in Philadelphia.  La Salle swept the Broncs in 2008, 7-4 and 11-1 in Lawrenceville. 

Rider leads the all-time series 17-15.

Rider completes the 2013 season, hosting Fairfield University on Saturday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m., at Herb and Joan Young Field.
