In their best showing of the season, the Leopards had an outstanding game winning (5-0) against the Ewing Girls SC Overdrive.

After Mackenzie Esposito scored two goals in the first half, the team never looked back. The girls played with great confidence and dominated possession, displaying a much improved passing game. Sophia Denarski, Emily Franceschini and Briana Audet each scored a goal.

Olivia Drake, Teagan Sinkewicz, Isabella Garcia, Isabelle Flemm and Yahaira Lopez fueled the Leopards’ relentless offensive attack by consistently winning possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities.

Solid defense from fullbacks Emily Chess and Nikki White and Goalie Katie Ciuffreda kept Ewing scoreless, resulting in the Leopard’s 3rd shutout in 5 league games. Midway through the fall season, the Leopards are now 4-0-1 in league play and 6-2-1 overall.

LHSA Night at Rider University

The Lawrence Hamnett Soccer Association was invited to the Rider University vs. Siena College men’s soccer match Friday night.

The club was proudly represented by the U-11 Blazers and the U-11 Sharks teams. The teams were welcomed by the Rider soccer community, given complimentary Rider soccer shirts and invited to watch the warm-ups at field level.

The thrill continued for the boys as they escorted the varsity players during pre-game ceremonies, were the ball boys during the match and even entertained the nearly sold out crowd at halftime.

The crowd was treated to a tight match as the Saints from Siena College scored a first half goal and the score remained 1-0 until midway through the second half when the hometown team was able to score the equalizer off a cross from a crafty set piece designed by Rider head coach Charlie Inverso.

The play for the remainder of the match was intense as each team had opportunities to score the go ahead goal in regulation but very good goalkeeping kept the score locked at one. On this brisk night in Lawrence, the players (and parents) were going to be treated to overtime.

The anticipation of a Rider win in the extra time was quickly deflated when 31 seconds into the overtime period the Saints were able to score the game winner. Many Rider fans were in shock as it appeared that the Siena player was in an offsides position when the ball was played to him, the referee crew did not see it that way and allowed the goal, giving Siena a 2-1 victory.

The game’s finish presented a very good learning experience for the Shark and Blazer players – ALWAYS PLAY THE REFEREES WHISTLE!!! At the conclusion of the match there were some passionate conversations between the referees and Rider players/coaches which led to a Broncs player receiving a red card - another learning opportunity for the players and parents - always remember to follow the USYS Soccer Code:

  • Play the game for the game’s sake.
  • Be generous when you win.
  • Be graceful when you lose.
  • Be fair always no matter what the cost.
  • Obey the laws of the game.
  • Work for the good of your team.
  • Accept the decisions of the officials with good grace.
  • Believe in the honesty of your opponents.
  • Conduct yourself with honor and dignity.

Although the finish wasn’t what the LHSA contingency was hoping for, it was an enjoyable group evening. Coach Bidle and Coach Krisak hope that watching the college guys will be an inspiration to the Blazers and Sharks in their Sunday matches.
