Updated: Gov. Proposes Increasing School Aid to Lawrence by $672K; Special Meeting to Discuss Budget to be Held Thursday by Township Board of Education

How state aid will affect the Lawrence Township public school district's 2011-2012 school year budget will be the subject of Thursday's special board meeting.

On Tuesday Gov. Chris Christie announced in his his intention to increase funding to New Jersey’s public schools by $250 million.

Tonight, the governor's office revealed that, if the proposed state budget is approved, Lawrence Township public schools will receive $2,249,032 in state aid for the 2011-2012 school year – an increase of $672,646 in state aid from the current school year.

That state aid and how it will affect the district’s proposed budget for the 2011-2012 school year will be the main topic of discussion at a special meeting of the Lawrence Township Board of Education to be held tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. at Lawrence High School at 2525 Princeton Pike.

At its Feb. 14 meeting, the school board revealed that three drafts of the district’s 2011-2012 budget had been put together in advance of the governor revealing his proposed state budget – one based on the district receiving the same amount of state aid as last year, another with the district receiving less state aid, and the third with the district receiving no state aid at all.

As part of that meeting, Superintendent Philip Meara and Business Administrator Tom Eldridge gave a brief PowerPoint presentation about the proposed 2011-2012 school budget.
