The Sixth Annual Institute of Internal Auditors Case Competition took place from Sept. 21 to 23 in Orlando, Fla.

Accounting students Clarissa Beck ’13 and Noah Breen ’13 represented Rider University when they competed in the Sixth Annual Institute of Internal Auditors Case Competition from Sept. 21 to 23 in Orlando, Fla.

Beck’s team placed second out of 10 teams. This was Rider’s first year in the competition.

The students were placed on teams with individuals from all over the world. Beck’s team was composed of individuals from Ghana, South Africa and Thailand, as well as Orlando and Chicago. Each team was given an internal audit case involving a fictitious company, which members had to analyze and make recommendations during a 10-minute presentation.

“Clarissa was fabulous and responded to practitioner questions with ease and authority. I was very proud of her,” said Dr. Dorothy McMullen, associate professor of accounting, who also attended. “The competition was a wonderful opportunity for the students who went.”

Beck took McMullen’s Internal Auditing class during the fall semester of her junior year. Since Beck performed so well in the course, McMullen asked her if she wanted to participate in the competition, and Beck was selected to compete based on McMullen’s recommendation and her résumé.

“The course helped me a lot for the competition. Her workload for internal auditing was on the heavier side. It gave me an in-depth knowledge of what internal auditing is about. She used practical cases, real experiences in class,” said Beck, who also relied on the experience she gained during a co-op at Rothstein Kass, a mid-size professional services firm. This summer, she will intern at KPMG.
