Reminder: Parents Can Learn How to Talk to Their Kids About Sex Abuse During Presentation at LHS Tonight

On Nov. 28, the clinical director of PEI Kids will give a presentation at Lawrence High School offering parents advice how they can "hold sensitive conversations" about sexual abuse with their children.

The Lawrence Township public school district wants to remind parents about a presentation that will be held tonight, Monday, Nov. 28, at which they can learn how to “speak to and hold sensitive conversations with their children about sexual abuse.”

The presentation will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the library at Lawrence High School, 2525 Princeton Pike.

The speaker will be Juanita Brooks, clinical director for , a Lawrence Township-based nonprofit organization that provides programs and services for youth who have been sexually abused, bullied and are at-risk.

Brooks obtained her PhD from Rutgers University and is a licensed social worker. She is certified in advanced studies in child maltreatment with a specialization in child sexual abuse. She is also certified to treat juvenile sex offenders, and has over 15 years of experience working with child victims.

The presentation comes in the wake of the arrest earlier this month of , as well as the Penn State sex abuse scandal.

“Recent reports in the media are unfortunate reminders that when it comes to the safety and security of our children, there is no room for error, no place for guesswork, and no time to waste before doing what is right. As parents and educators, we are obligated to protect our children from potential harm and danger,” the school district said in a statement announcing tonight's presentation.
