LHS Students' Chinese Paintings on Display at Library

The exhibit featuring paintings by Lawrence High School students will be open at the Lawrence Branch of the Mercer County Library until Nov. 30.

An exhibit featuring paintings by Lawrence High School students opened at the Lawrence Branch of the Mercer County Library on Nov. 4.

The paintings will be on exhibit until Nov. 30.  Master Artist Yu-Chen Chen worked with the students and demonstrated both calligraphy and painting techniques. Ms. Chen is a master artist who currently practices Chinese Calligraphic and Painting Art forms.

The paintings are the final result of a grant that was funded by the Lawrence Township Education Foundation. The grant brought together students who study Mandarin and students in the fine arts program.

In Chinese Calligraphy, the idea behind a word, the elegance of the brush stroke, the quality and vigor of line and ink, use of space around the character all are given equal value. These are qualities that have been valued over thousands of years in Asian Art forms.

The Lawrence Township Education Foundation is a non-profit organization devoted to enhancing educational opportunities for Lawrence Township public school students; it has funded over 450 programs in the Lawrence schools since 1992.
