LHS Student Recognized in Congressional Art Contest

Lawrence High School student Anna Sternberg recently won second-place honors in the graphic arts category for New Jersey's 12th District in the 2011 Congressional Art Competition.

Lawrence High School student Anna Sternberg recently took part in the Congressional Art Competition and won second-place honors in the graphic arts category for New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District.

Also taking part in the annual competition – which allows high school students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and all U.S. territories to showcase their artistic abilities – were Lawrence High School students Brianna Gladwell and Samantha Wyckoff.

A mixed-media artwork by Emma Winslow Funaki of West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South won the grand prize for the 12th District. Funaki’s artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol building alongside work by other high school artists from across the country, and she will be invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Washington D.C. on June 25.

"I congratulate Emma and all of the winners in this year's Congressional Art Competition,” said U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (D-Hopewell  Township), who represents New Jersey’s 12th District. “Their work demonstrates great creativity, talent, and originality, and I am honored to showcase their efforts.  Emma’s work in particular is skillful and brave, and I look forward to seeing her future art in the years to come."

Since 1982, according to Holt, the annual Congressional Art Competition has showcased exceptional art pieces by high school students from around the United States. Artworks selected by each member of Congress are displayed for one year in a gallery in the Cannon Tunnel, the passage that connects the U.S. Capitol with the House of Representatives office buildings. The tunnel is traveled by members of Congress, staff, and visitors on a daily basis.
