Lawrenceville Whiz Kids Offer Kindergarteners Advice

Our Whiz Kids were asked, based on their experiences as students, what advice would they offer to kindergarteners for their first day of school.

Tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 6) is the first day of the 2011-2012 school year for public school students in Lawrence Township. We asked some of our Lawrenceville Patch Whiz Kids to offer some advice to kindergartners as they begin their school careers.

, rising ninth-grader at Lawrence High School:

“I know starting a new school can be scary.  It's normal to be nervous. I'm starting high school and I'm nervous! My advice to you is don't be afraid to be yourself, talk to new kids, and try to make new friends. Make sure you listen to your teachers, because you are going to learn so many things from them that will help you for your whole life. Also, enjoy it, because elementary school goes by really fast!  Good luck and have fun!”

, rising ninth-grader at Lawrence High School:

“Be nice to everyone – the kids you meet in kindergarten will be with you until you graduate. Stay organized and give your parents your folder when you get home. Don't be afraid if you don't know something – it's school, you are there to learn. Kids will want to be your friend if you have a smile on your face.”

Mariefred said she wishes naptime was an elective.

, rising eighth-grader at Lawrence Middle School

“Kindergarten will be so much fun!  During the year, you will come across new things that you have never done before.  You shouldn't be afraid to try new things because you may end up liking it and even if you do not you can always say that you tried! There will also be new kids you have never met before.  This is a great opportunity to make new friends and you will find that you will have some of these friends forever.  I know that some of my best friends are from kindergarten. I hope that you have a great year and get to have many exciting and different experiences!”

, rising seventh-grader at Lawrence Middle School:

“Smile a lot. Don't be shy, friendly kids have more fun. If you want to rock at recess, try to get to the playground before school starts and get used to all the equipment. Don't worry if you call you teacher ‘Mom’ by mistake. Remember that everyone is good at something. You will be better at some things and worse at others. Just do your best.”

Nelle noted that, sadly, there is no recess in middle school.

, rising fourth-grader at Saint Ann School:

“Don’t wait for someone to say hi to you.  Walk up to them and introduce yourself first. They are most likely just as nervous as you are and things always seem easier when you have a friend. Don’t be worried ...  your parents will definitely not forget to pick you up after school. Don’t taste the chalk. It really doesn’t taste like marshmallows.”
