Willy Wonka Science Night a Sweet Success

Willy Wonka Science Night, a sold out two-night event on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, was a “sweet” success! Hosted by the Lawrence High School Chemistry Club under the guidance of Dr. Alicia Orta-Ramirez, head of the Cornell University Food Science Program, and club advisor and LHS teacher Matt Davis, the event spread awareness about nutrition and health in a fun and educational manner.

Students decorated the LHS Science Wing with an assortment of candy wrappers in order to help the children believe they had entered Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Willy Wonka workers (members of Chemistry Club) performed experiments for each station as volunteers from science and drama classes acted as tour guides. The seven stations for each night were: the Smores room, Ice Cream room, Smoothie room, Fudge room, Popcorn room, Soda room, and Caramel room. The most popular were the Caramel, Fudge, Ice Cream, and Popcorn rooms.

Dr. Orta-Ramirez commented that she loved how food science was incorporated within each group and was portrayed to appeal from elementary to middle school level children. Parents, children, and students had a great time participating in Willy Wonka Science Night and, based on the results of pre- and post-event surveys, learned more about the food sciences as well.
