Lawrence Diversity Day 2012 to be Held This Sunday

The event, which is feature a variety of free foods, performances and demonstrations, will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at Lawrence High School on May 6.

The Lawrence Township Human Relations Committee in cooperation with the Lawrence Township School District is sponsoring the Seventh Annual “Diversity/Culture Day 2012” on Sunday, May 6, from noon to 4 p.m. This year the event will be held in the Commons at Lawrence High School at 2525 Princeton Pike.

On March 25 of this year the Lawrence Township Human Relations Committee celebrated 10 years of existence. The role of the committee is as follows: to recommend and evaluate programs directed at increasing cultural awareness and celebration of the diversity of cultures.

Join us as we connect with and celebrate the many ethnic, racial and cultural groups living in our community. Meet your neighbors from every part of Lawrence Township, make new friends, and be part of this community occasion. Experience the different exhibits, various performances, and international music.

Admission and parking, plus food from around the world, are free, and there will be a children’s corner with games and projects.

Councilman Michael Powers is the liaison between the council and the Human Relations Committee. Teresita Bastides-Heron and Chris Peterson are the co-chairs, and members include police Lt. Charles Edgar, Nelson Melendez, Elissa Grodd Schragger, Rich McLaugahlin, Keith Dewey, Romy Buerano, and Ted Turkoski.

Dr. Crystal Lovell, Superintendent of the Lawrence Township school district, will be our keynote speaker this year.

The program this year is as diverse as our community. Kuulei’s Hawaiian Dancers will be presenting their traditional dance. Dr. Maria Cora Gaffar will sing a Filipino Classical Folk song. The students from the Ogniwo School from Trenton will be dancing the Polonaise, a traditional Polish dance, and also will be reading some Polish Poetry. Members of the Islamic Circle of Mercer County will be doing Henna hand painting and Arabic name writing plus a power point presentation. Also there will be World Km Tae Kwon Do demonstration.

The Lawrence High School International Alliance and the Latino singers will do a program. Dr. Michael Shiue will do the Chinese Calligraphy and Kai Fang Caivano, Amelia Chin and Hui Ping Ling will do the Chinese Paper Art., and Brandon Wang from the Language School will perform with the Chinese Yo Yo. We will also have the Ryan Kilcoyne Irish Dancers, and will close the event with Lia Fail Pipe Band.
