Ed Foundation Awards $51,000 to Lawrence Schools

The Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTEF) is pleased to announce it has completed its Fall 2012 grant cycle by awarding 18 grants totaling more than $51,000 to fund innovative programs in Lawrence Township Public Schools.

The grants, submitted by district teachers, cover a broad range of disciplines including physical education, music, science, reading and speech therapy.

At Lawrence Intermediate School (LIS), fourth-grade students will be treated to an “Academy on the Go” assembly presented by the Academy of Natural Sciences.  Fifth-grade students will improve their reading comprehension with new interactive language arts center activities, and rising sixth-grade students will receive books for a summer reading program. 

Also awarded at LIS are new percussion instruments to enhance the music program.

Athletic, school, and community events at Lawrence High School will all be improved as a new sound system will be installed in the gymnasium.  A basketball rebounding machine will be implemented in the physical education department for use by all students as well as athletes. 

Other grants funded at Lawrence High School include materials to create an online video library, registration for academy students to attend the New Jersey Model Congress simulation, and multiple sets of Senteo responders to engage students in instruction.  Commercial and practical arts students will receive new tablet accessories, and the opportunity to visit the Metropolitan Museum of art to visit a digital art exhibit.

Students at Slackwood Elementary and Lawrenceville Elementary will participate in new programs to assist in speech therapy.  Lawrence Middle School (LMS) will publish a literary magazine, and music students will receive online subscriptions to record their performances. 

Other funded programs include a family engagement program at Slackwood Elementary titled “Realizing the American Dream,” a greenhouse will be added to the successful SNAP space at Ben Franklin, and exercise ball chairs will be placed in a Ben Franklin classroom.  Funding for professional development will also be implemented in all lower elementary schools.

The Lawrence Township Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization that fosters educational excellence, creativity, and achievement in the Lawrence Township Public Schools. Since 1992, it has funded over 500 programs in the Lawrence schools with grants in excess of $2.5 million.
