Speed Limit Officially Lowered Along Part of Route 206

The speed limit on Route 206 (Lawrence Road) between Skillman and Brearley avenues officially dropped from 40 mph to 35 mph last week. NJ DOT crews have also been doing work to install a new traffic light at Route 206 and Darrah Lane in Lawrence Township.

Keen observers who regularly travel Route 206 (Lawrence Road) in the southern half of Lawrence Township will have noticed that crews from the New Jersey Department of Transportation have, for the last two weeks or so, been excavating and performing other work related to the new traffic light to be installed at the intersection of Route 206 and Darrah Lane.

Eagle-eyed motorists will also have noticed that the speed limit along Route 206 has officially changed, dropping from 40 mph to 35 mph between Skillman Avenue – which is located just south of Rider University – and Brearley Avenue a little north of Notre Dame High School.  

Tim Greeley, an NJ DOT spokesman, confirmed “underground electrical installation work” needed for the new traffic light was completed last week at the Route 206 and Darrah Lane intersection.

He also noted that new signs bearing the lower 35 mph speed limit were erected last week at regular intervals along Route 206 between Skillman Avenue and Brearley Avenue.

The lowering of the speed limit along that stretch of Route 206 is the in the wake of an increasing number of pleas from residents concerned about the safety of children and other pedestrians who must walk along and cross the busy thoroughfare.

Among those who whose father, an 83-year-old school crossing guard, at the intersection of Route 206 and Eggerts Crossing Road. While the elder Sebasto survived, he suffered nine broken ribs, three fractured vertebrae in his spine, a fractured leg and a punctured lung.

Information was not available last week about when exactly NJ DOT expects to complete above-ground installation work and have the new traffic light at Route 206 and Darrah Lane operational.

In related news, NJ DOT announced in March it was awarding Lawrence Township a grant worth $220,000 to fund road improvements along Darrah Lane.
