Lawrence to Receive $45,600 Highway Safety Grant

A total of 95 grants totalling $14.65 million for New Jersey municipalities, counties and airports were announced on Monday.

Lawrence Township has been awarded a $45,605.83 “Safe Corridor” highway safety grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The Lawrence Township award was one of 95 grants – totaling $14.65 million – that Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno announced during a press conference in South Plainfield on Monday (Aug. 22).

The grants – which are going to municipalities, counties and general aviation airports for infrastructure improvement and safety projects – are being awarded through three programs: the Local Aid Infrastructure Fund program; the Airport Improvement program; and the Safe Corridor program.

“The funding we are announcing today will enable local governments like South Plainfield to move forward with high-priority improvement projects and safety initiatives without putting pressure on local property taxes,” Guadagno said.

“By investing in our infrastructure and ensuring the health of our transportation assets, we will support New Jersey’s continued economic growth, encourage additional business attraction and create more jobs in cities and towns across the Garden State,” she said.

Lawrence Township was one of three Mercer County municipalities to be awarded a Safe Corridor grant. The others are Trenton, which will receive a $31,843.12 grant, and West Windsor, which is getting a $31,168.48 grant.

The Safe Corridor program, established in 2003, provides funding for traffic enforcement and safety initiatives along state highways.

Lawrence Township Manager Richard Krawczun said past Safe Corridor grants were used by the township to purchase equipment for the police department. He said the township administration will meet with representatives of the police department to determine how best to use the new grant.

Among the other local awards announced Monday are an $617,187 grant for runway crack repairs and markings at Trenton-Robbinsville Airport in Robbinsville Township, and an $81,377 grant for taxiway rehabilitation at Trenton-Mercer Airport in Ewing Township.
