Wrong Way Driver on Route 1 was Doing Over 90 MPH

The man, who eluded capture, was fleeing a traffic stop in Trenton when he entered Lawrence Township speeding north in the southbound lanes of Route 1 early Saturday, police said.

Authorities early Saturday (Oct. 6) were working to identify and locate a man who they say was traveling in excess of 90 mph when he drove a sport utility vehicle the wrong way on Route 1 in Lawrence Township.

The suspect, allegedly wanted by Trenton police in connection with a drug investigation, fled a traffic stop in the state capital and, upon entering Lawrence, was spotted at 12:32 a.m. traveling north in the southbound lanes of Route 1, police said.

Fearing there might be a collision between the suspect’s vehicle and an innocent motorist, township police quickly tried to stop the oncoming traffic in advance of the speeding SUV.

The suspect, however, apparently reversed his direction at some point and abandoned his vehicle in the woods adjacent to a jughandle in the area of Darrah Lane. Police found the vehicle there at 12:58 a.m.

A search of the surrounding area was made using a township police dog. The suspect was tracked to Lawrence Shopping Center, but the man’s scent was lost there and he could not be located, police said.
