Two Teens Charged With Trying to Break Into Car

Two 17-year-old Trenton males were caught after they allegedly tried to burglarize a car Tuesday morning in an incident that Lawrence Township police say is unrelated to Wednesday's arrests of three people allegedly involved in a different car burglary.

Two teenage boys from Trenton were arrested during the early-morning hours of Tuesday (Aug. 16) after they allegedly tried to break into a car in the Tiffany Woods development off Spruce Street, according to Lawrence Township police.

Lt. Charles Edgar, spokesman for the township police department, said the suspects – who are both 17 years old – were each charged with attempted burglary. Their names were not released because, under the law, they are considered  juveniles.

It was 1:24 a.m. Tuesday when police received a 911 call from a resident of J. Russel Smith Road who said he had just interrupted someone trying to break into his car.

The caller had gone outside intending to retrieve something from the vehicle, which was in his driveway. But as soon as he walked out of his home, Edgar explained, the caller saw someone standing next to his 2002 Chevrolet Traverse. That person, a young male dressed in a red shirt, allegedly was in the act of lifting up the handle of the driver’s door, Edgar said.

As soon as he realized he had been spotted, the red-shirted male turned and started to walk away with another young male, dressed in a blue shirt, who had been standing at the edge of the driveway, possible acting as a lookout, Edgar said.

He said several police officers hurried to the area in response to the 911 call and, based on the descriptions given by the caller, quickly located and detained the two 17-year-old suspects.

The incident remains under investigation by Detective Scott Caloiaro, Edgar said. As part of that investigation, he said, Caloiaro is looking into whether the two Trenton teenagers had anything to do with another car break-in that happened that same night a block away on Conrad Court.

The owner of that vehicle – a 2002 Land Rover – called police at 1:29 p.m. Tuesday after he found his driver’s door slightly ajar. The vehicle, which had been left unlocked, had been rummaged through but it appeared that nothing had been stolen, Edgar said.

Edgar said the arrests of the two 17-year-olds are not connected to the arrests of three other people who allegedly took part in the burglary of a car in the 1200 block of Lawrence Road (Route 206) on Wednesday (Aug. 17).
