Slackwood Crew Helps Fight Blaze at Ewing Business

Volunteer firefighters from Lawrence Township's Slackwood Fire Co. helped battle a large blaze involving mulch, scrap wood and tree trunks at a recycling company on Calhoun Streeet in Ewing on Thursday afternoon.

Volunteer firefighters from Lawrence Township’s Slackwood Fire Co. responded into Ewing Township this afternoon (Thursday, June 2) to help battle a large blaze involving mulch, scrap wood and tree trunks.

The fire at the Mercer Group International recycling yard at 1519 Calhoun St. was reported about 3:40 p.m.

The blaze sent smoke wafting throughout the southern ends of Ewing and Lawrence and the northern side of Trenton.

Firefighters from all three Ewing Township fire companies – Prospect Heights, Pennington Road and West Trenton – were on the scene along with Slackwood’s Snorkel 21.

Part of Calhoun Street was closed to traffic because of fire hoses laid that had to be connected to several hydrants in the neighborhood.
