Red Flag Warning Again Issued for Much of New Jersey

The combination of strong wind gusts, low relative humidity and dry fuels will again pose a significant risk of wildfire throughout much of the Garden State Tuesday afternoon.

For the second day in a row, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Central and Southern New Jersey – including Lawrence Township and Mercer County – due to strong wind gusts, low relative humidity and dry fuels that will pose a significant risk of wildfire.

The warning for today, Tuesday, March 29, goes into effect at noon and lasts until 6 p.m., as northwest wind gusts are expected to reach at least 20 mph. Covered by the warning are Hunterdon, Somerset and Middlesex counties and all other counties to the south.

Combined with the wind, according to the weather service, today’s relative humidity will drop below 30 percent and the moisture levels of fine fuels like grass, leaves and pine needles will fall under 10 percent to “lead to a more rapid rate of spread of any fine fuel fires that may develop.”
