A 40-year-old Lawrence Township man was arrested last week and charged with sexual assault on a child under the age of 13, township police spokesman Lt. Charles Edgar confirmed.

Edgar said police launched an investigation on Friday, March 16, after receiving information from the Lawrence Township school system that the child might have been sexually assaulted. The alleged assault did not happen at the school or involve school personnel.

Edgar declined to provide more specific details in an effort to protect the identity of the child involved. But he did confirm that “the victim and the accused are relatives; this was not a situation involving a stranger.”
