Police Blotter: Car Flips, Driver Charged With DUI

Here's a roundup of notable police activity in Lawrence Township from May 5 through May 7.

DUI

Jaimie Stein, 26, of Hamilton Township, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after the car she was driving flipped over onto its roof late on Thursday, May 5, according to Lt. Charles Edgar, spokesman for Lawrence Township Police Department.

Stein was driving on the Kelly Viaduct, the overpass that links Quaker Bridge Mall with the southbound side of Brunswick Pike (Route 1), when her car hit the curb and rolled over about 11:20 p.m.

Township police, volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded to the accident and found that Stein had suffered only minor injuries and had crawled from her overturned 2007 Ford Fusion prior to their arrival.

Officer Joseph Radlinsky investigated the accident and charged Stein with driving under the influence, reckless driving and related traffic offenses, according to Edgar.

Burglary

A resident of the 200 block of Eldridge Avenue called township police at 2:51 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, to report that a circular saw and a lawn mower – valued at a total of about $310 – had been stolen from his home, Edgar said.

The resident had just regained possession of the house, which had been temporarily taken over by a bank as part of a foreclosure.

After settling the foreclosure issue, the resident returned home to find the lawnmower missing from the garage and the saw from within the house, according to Edgar, who noted that there was no evidence of forced entry.

Officer Richard Laird III was assigned the investigation.

Theft

At 10:04 a.m. on Thursday, May 5, Officer James Vardanega was sent to the Olson residence hall on the Rider University campus to meet with a 19-year-old student from Warwick, N.Y., who wanted to report the recent theft of $280 from her bank account, Edgar said. He said the crime remains under investigation.

Criminal Mischief

Graffiti that include profane language was discovered painted on the side of a restroom near the Bergen Street side of Village Park about 6:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, Edgar said. He said workers from the township Department of Public Works responded to remove the graffiti. Officer Andrew Lee is investigating the crime.

Investigation

At 4:25 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, Officer John Glenn was sent to Texas Avenue to mediate a dispute in which a 78-year-old woman accused her neighbor of cutting down her ivy bush without her permission to install a fence, Edgar said. He said Glenn met with the neighbor, a 36-year-old male, who agreed to replace the bush he had cut down.

Theft

About $10 in spare change and a GPS unit worth $75 were stolen from a 2008 Mazda while it was parked at the Meadow Woods apartment complex in the 400 block of Lawrence Road (Route 206), Edgar said. 

The vehicle’s 26-year-old owner reported the crime to police at 4:37 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, and believes the items were stolen sometime after 10:30 p.m. the night before, Edgar said. He said the woman told police she thinks she had locked the vehicle, but not sign of forced entry was found.
