Updated: Fatality Along Northeast Corridor Railroad Tracks Remains Under Investigation

There were train delays in both directions after a trespasser was struck and killed on the tracks in Woodbridge

There is no word on the identity of a victim struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Iselin earlier today.

The victim was killed three miles east of Metropark, located in the Iselin section of Woodbridge Township, said Amtrak spokesman Clifford Cole. The person was struck by a southbound Amtrak Northeast Regional train traveling past Metropark from Boston to Washington, DC, collided with the victim at approximately 3:30 pm. The Star-Ledger is reporting that the victim was a 13-year-old girl who was either walking or playing on the train tracks.

Amtrak was notified of the accident at 3:45 pm, Cole said. None of the train's 229 passengers were injured.

The accident disrupted train traffic on both the main Northeast Corridor route and the North Jersey Corridor line, the shore spur that runs from Woodbridge through Bay Head.

Delays initially ran up to an hour, but trains parked and waiting on the Northeast Corridor line near Metropark slowly began to move by 6:30 pm.

Amtrak and Woodbridge police were on the scene investigating the accident, as were officials from the Middlesex County Medical Examiner's office. Amtrak officials were in charge of the investigation, according to Woodbridge spokesman John Hagerty.

The incident caused massive vehicle backups around Route 27 where Metropark is located. Drivers were trying to pick up commuters coming home from jobs in New York and other cities, but were having little success getting around the solid line of cars.

"What's going on?" said a frustrated woman wandering out of the Iselin train station. "You can't get in or out of here."

Loudspeakers kept announcing train delays and gave apologies for the inconvenience. Stranded passengers had no idea what the cause was of the delay.

While the trains began moving, an engine was hooked up to the Amtrak train that struck the victim. The passengers had been transferred to another train and were on their way again, Cole said.

The train involved in the accident started to move. It was being towed to the Amtrak maintenance yard in Newark.
