Bicyclist Killed on Route 1 in Trenton at Lawrence Line

Two accidents involving bicyclists – one in Lawrence Township and the other just over the township line in Trenton – sent one man to the hospital and left the other dead on Monday, May 9.

The deadly accident – involving a bicycle struck by a vehicle – occurred along the southbound lanes of the Trenton Freeway (Route 1) in Trenton, just south of the Lawrence Township line, about 5:30 p.m.

Both Trenton and Lawrence received 911 calls about the accident, so both municipalities sent police officers and emergency medical personnel to the scene.

Because the injuries to the bicyclist were fatal, the southbound lanes of Route 1 were closed for several hours while Trenton police and the detectives from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office conducted an investigation.

Lawrence Township police assisted with traffic control, closing the southbound side of the Trenton Freeway where Route 1 splits into the freeway and Business Route 1 just south of Franklin Corner Road.

Not long after the fatal accident was reported, another accident involving a bicyclist was reported along Brunswick Pike (Business Route 1) not far from the Brunswick Circle within Lawrence Township.

That bicyclist, suffering from an obvious head injury, was transported by Lawrence Emergency Medical Services ambulance to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton for treatment of his injuries.

Both accident remain under investigation by authorities at this time.
