Down a Pound

It could have been better, but i think it's a good start to Patch Takes It Off.

Let's start this update with a brief recounting of my efforts for the week:

three days at the gym with a total of 12 miles spent on the elliptical machine and an average pace of roughly 8:15 per mile, a couple of days of aggressive weight work.

aside from Friday night (Chinese food with the family) and Saturday night (a barbecue), I managed to keep close watch on what I was eating. I even managed a couple of days of vegetarian (grilled vegetables, salads) and I stayed away from the heavily sweetened drinks.

The upshot: I'm down a little more than a pound, though it was probably more earlier in the week.

My goals for the coming week are similar: four days at the gym, three to include weights, with a transition from the elliptical to the treadmill and the return to running. More significantly, I think, I need to be more disciplined with my diet -- one night off the health grid is probably OK, but two is not.

And I heard from a number of readers who either plan to embark on their own fitness quests or are offering help. In the coming weeks, I'm going to turn this weekly update over to them to offer suggestions with the hope of making this quest more our readers and users than about me.

Email me at hank.kalet@patch.com with your stories, advice and fitness photos and let me know if you want me to include your thoughts in future updates.
