Obituary: Josephine Hutchinson, 95

A longtime member of Lawrence Road Presbyterian Church, she volunteered with "Meals on Wheels" for 35 years.

Josephine Hutchinson of Lawrence Township passed away on April 7 at the age of 95.

Born in Trenton to Helen and Joseph Vinch in 1917, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, George, and three brothers, Phillip, Samuel and Charles Vinch. Surviving are her sister Mary Buchanan of Norristown, Pa.; her daughter MaryJo and husband Sen. Bob Smith of Key Largo, Fla; daughter Ellen and husband Bill Modica of Florence; and son George and wife Wendy of Wolfeboro, N.H.

In addition, there are seven grandchildren: Jennifer Smith-Blanchard Esq., Robert, and Jason Smith, Ellen and Peter Modica, and Geordy and Dr. Dana Hutchinson-Riordan; and three great grandchildren, Thomas, Emmanuelle and Nathanial Blanchard.

Josephine was a graduate of Trenton Central High School Class of 1935, and The College of New Jersey then New Jersey State Teachers College) Class of 1939. As a point of interest, while student teaching, her master teacher arrived each day at school by horse and buggy.

During her lifetime Josephine volunteered for many causes: “Meals on Wheels” for 35 years, well into her 80s, and additionally volunteered for years with the Washington Crossing Historical Association with her husband George. Lawrence Road Presbyterian Church.

Josephine was most proud of winning the “Best Legs” contest in her fifth-grade class, against stiff competition! In 1927 she observed Charles Lindbergh taking a victory lap over Trenton after his Paris Flight.

Funeral arrangements will be private under the direction of the Wilson-Apple Funeral Home, 2560 Pennington Rd., Pennington. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Humane Society of your choice.
