Lawrence's Boy Scout Troop 28 Helps "Restore the Shore"

The grass the Scouts planted will help stabilize the dunes and allow the dunes to grow in size.

The Boy Scouts of America Troop 28 from Lawrence spent several hours on Saturday, October 19 helping to “Restore the Shore.”

Ten Scouts planted dune grass on the new mounds of sand created during the restoration of beaches near Peahala Park on Long Beach Island. The grass will help stabilize the dunes and allow the dunes to grow in size.

“It was really easy to plant the grass where the sand was wet”, said Second Class Scout Russell Knab. “It was the areas where the sand was dry that digging to a depth of twelve inches was frustrating.”

Afterwards, the Scouts enjoyed a barbeque meal from Bill Hutson, owner of Lorry’s Island End Motel.

“It was great to have the Scouts help out," Hutson said. "In all, over 14,000 pieces were planted by the 100+ volunteers who assisted in the restoration project."

“Considering it was work, and our first time participating, we had a lot of fun”, said First Class Scout Jack Wagner, who planned the activity for the Troop.  “I think there is a good chance we will make this an annual event”.

Troop 28 is open to boys who have completed fifth grade, and meets Friday nights from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Troop Hut at Lawrence Road Presbyterian Church. For information, click here or email Scoutmaster Stephen Monfre (stephen.monfre@gmail.com) or Committee Chairman Larry Fox (LAFoxlaw@aol.com).
