Work Begins July 1 to Replace Carnegie Road Bridge

The bridge carrying Carnegie Road over Assunpink Creek will be closed for reconstruction beginning July 1, with construction expected to be completed late October of this year.  The bridge is located between U.S. Route 1 in Lawrence Township and Laura Avenue in Hamilton Township.

The existing bridge was built in 1961 and has been deemed Structurally Deficient, with a Sufficiency Rating of 34.4 out of 100.  Typically, lower Sufficiency Ratings reflect deteriorated conditions of the structural components.  

The work to be performed includes the demolition and removal of the existing bridge and construction of a new bridge in the same alignment.  The new structure will accommodate two 12-foot wide travel lanes, two 4-foot wide shoulders, and a six-foot wide concrete sidewalk on the east side of the bridge. The overall length of the new structure will be approximately 70 feet.

Carnegie Road will be closed during construction with local traffic permitted up to the limits of the bridge.  Through traffic will be detoured to U.S. Route 1, Bakers Basin Road, Basin Road and Bucknell Avenue.

The Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders approved the award of bid to the Marbro Inc. on June 9, 2011. The cost of the project is $1,317,117.00 and will be funded through a grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation Division of Local Aid and Economic Development.
