Mariefred Evans - Whiz Kid of the Week

Welcome to Whiz Kids. Each week we will honor a great kid from Lawrence Township who is an inspiration to all of us, adults included.

  • Mariefred Evans
  • 13 years old (almost 14)
  • Eighth-grader at Lawrence Middle School
  • Active volunteer and president of LMS Student Government

“Enthusiastic,” “extraordinary,” and “a joy” are all words used to describe Mariefred Evans by those who know her.

An eighth-grader at Lawrence Middle School, Mariefred is the president of the LMS student government, a captain of the LMS cheerleading squad, and a member of the school’s track team. She has placed on the High Honor Roll for the last two years and volunteers with the Special Olympics through LMS.

Last summer, she worked as a volunteer with the summer reading program at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library. She is currently looking forward to her annual farm vacation and lots of babysitting this summer.

Her former girl scout leader, Cheryl Curbishley, described Mariefred as a leader, a “people person.”

Curbishley said Mariefred “has a presence that most kids her age do not have. She is very self-assured and pleasant. She is already cultivating her leadership skills in everyday life.”

Curbishley expects that Mariefred “will make a positive impact on the world. She is extraordinary.”

Similar sentiments were voiced by the coordinator of the summer reading program, Andrea Lenhardt, who now serves as the youth services librarian at the Mercer County Library’s Hickory Corner Branch in East Windsor.

Lenhardt said Mariefred “went above and beyond the rest of the volunteers. She always wants to do more.”

Lenhardt said she was most-impressed with how articulate Mariefred was with the parents. She “portrays herself as so much more mature and it comes across as genuine. She is such a joy.”

Crystal Rogozinski, LMS teacher and advisor to the school’s Unified Sports/Special Olympics club, described Mariefred as someone “who is kind to everyone she meets. She is an extremely diligent worker and her ambition is admirable. Mariefred is the president of Lawrence Middle School and has been a strong leader. She is captivating when she speaks to her peers and keeps everyone around her motivated. She is an enthusiastic girl.”

Rogozinski added, “Mariefred is a role model for her peers.”
