Free Online GED Assistance Through Libraries Expires Dec. 31

There are less than three months left for anyone interested in taking the GED exam to receive free online study aid to help them prepare at their local library.

The statewide subscription to GED Online is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2012. Since the tool was launched in January by the NJ State Library, over 600 people have signed up and logged over 1,000 hours of training. There are still a number of seats available for anyone interested.

The State Library purchased GED Online, a web-based GED preparation program, and provided free access to residents with a NJ library card, in an effort to assist in the economic recovery of the state by helping job seekers enhance their credentials. The online study tool covers all five of the subjects tested by the GED exam: writing, social studies, science, reading and mathematics.

Developed by McGraw Hill, GED Online provides step-by-step, interactive instruction, and prepares users to take the GED test through a series of customizable lessons, study plans and quizzes. The tool also helps users identify strengths and weaknesses through assessments which measure student mastery, and offers remediation lessons for students requiring additional instruction

“GED Online is an important addition to our suite of online resources,” said N.J. State Librarian Mary Chute. “It provides the instruction needed to give a better understanding of the GED test sections and gives job seekers and others the knowledge to take the test with confidence.”

Each library in the state has an account available to set up new patrons; however, patrons can request log-in information by sending an e-mail to GEDOnline@njstatelib.org, providing their full name and preferred e-mail address.
