Experts to Discuss Brearley House History on Sunday

The event on Oct. 16, hosted by the Lawrence Historical Society, will focus on the history, architecture and restoration of the 250-year-old house that is a Lawrence Township landmark.

The Lawrence Historical Society will continue the 250th anniversary celebration of the on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 16) by hosting a panel discussion featuring experts who will talk about the history, architecture and restoration of the house located at the end of Meadow Road, off Princeton Pike.

Taking part in the 3 p.m. event – which is free and open to the public – will be Lawrence Township Historian Dennis Waters; Michael Mill, the architect who supervised the restoration of the Brearley House; and Ian Burrow, the archaeologist who supervised many years of digs at the Brearley House.

“Following the to mark the 250th anniversary of the 1761 Brearley House, this program is designed for people who want to know more about the house and its place in Lawrence history,” Waters said.

Mills, partner at Plainsboro-based Mills + Schnoering Architects LLC, has devoted more than 25 years to the preservation, restoration, and adaptive use of some of the region's most significant historic structures. He has served as chair of the Advisory Group of the Historic Resources Committee of the American Institute of Architects and is a past president of Preservation New Jersey, a statewide non-profit preservation organization.

Burrow, vice president and principal archaeologist at Hunter Research Inc. in Trenton, has more than 30 years’ experience directing cultural resource management projects in the United States and the United Kingdom, with particular expertise in directing archaeological investigations carried out in conjunction with restoration.

Following the hour-long panel discussion, visitors will be able to tour the house and grounds.
