Lawrence Under Excessive Heat Watch

Tips to keep you and your loved ones safe during excessive heat watch.

The Lawrence Twp. Area is under an excessive heat watch from Wednesday at 1 p.m. until Thursday at 6 p.m., according to Weather.com.

Heat is the number one weather-related killer, according to the National Weather Service. They offers tips to keep you and your loved ones safe while the mercury is rising.

  • Schedule strenuous activities during the coolest times of the day.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing that covers as much skin as possible to reflect heat and sunlight.
  • Wear sunscreen. Sunburn reduces your body's ability to dissipate heat.
  • Watch what you eat; Meat and other proteins increase metabolic heat production and also, increase water loss.
  • Drink plenty of non-alcoholic, decaffeinated fluids. Drink plenty of water or liquids even if you do not feel thirsty. Those with certain health conditions, epilepsy or kidney, liver and heart disease should consult a physician before increasing fluid intake.
  • Spend more time in air conditioning. If you do not have air conditioning at home, visit a library, store or other location that is air conditioned.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in a car. A car's interior temperature can reach unsafe levels in under two minutes.
