5 Things You Need to Know About This Weekend

A walk through history, a little exercise, a performance of 'Annie,' a creek cleanup and play time at the library are among the events going on this weekend in Lawrence Township.

Here are five local events happening this weekend that you need to know about:

Saturday, April 2 – D&R Canal Walk

On April 2 Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park will host a walk along the canal with historian Vicki Chirco, who will discuss the history of the canal along the way. The walk begins at 9:30 a.m. at the historic at 4278 Quaker Rd. (not far from Mercer Mall). The walk will proceed along the canal towpath to the , where members of the Lawrence Historical Society will offer a tour of the restored 18th century home. The walk will conclude back at the bridge tender’s house, a 2½-mile round trip. Pre-registration is required and can be done through the state park’s website. The walk will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather. The Brearley House will be open for touring from 10 a.m. to noon regardless of the weather.

Saturday, April 2 – Zumba Fitness Training

The public is invited to attend Zumba class with the firefighters of Lawrenceville Volunteer Fire Co. during Saturdays in April. “Get moving with this high energy exercise program with instructor Giancarla. Did you know that almost 50 percent of firefighter deaths result from heart attacks and overexertion? Join the firefighters for a fun way to work out and make a difference.” The class starts at 10 a.m. on April 2 at the firehouse at 64 Phillips Ave. Additional classes will be held at 11 a.m. on April 9; 10 a.m. on April 16; and 11 a.m. on April 23.

Saturday, April 2 & Sunday, April 3 - Annie

The Drama Club of Saint Ann School will present a production of “Annie” at 7 p.m. on April 2 and 3 p.m. on April 3. (Additional performances will be held on Friday, April 8, and Saturday, April 9, both at 7 p.m.) Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children. Children under the age of 3 are free. Doors will open a half-hour before the show, which will be held in the auditorium of the school at 34 Rossa Ave. For tickets, contact Barb Rowcotsky by email or phone at (609) 883-0246.

Sunday, April 3 – Shabakunk Creek Cleanup

Lawrence High School’s Environmental Club and the Lawrence Township Public Works Department will hold a cleanup of the Shabakunk Creek from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 3. The clean-up will take place along the creek near Princeton Pike and the rear of Lawrence Shopping Center. Gloves, bags and recycling containers will be provided by the township. Sunday, April 3 – Lego Time

From 1 to 2 p.m. on April 3 the Lawrence Township headquarters of the Mercer County Library will host free play with Lego building blocks for children ages 5 to 10 who are accompanied by a caregiver. No registration is required. For more information, call (609) 882-9246. The library is located at 2751 Brunswick Pike (Business Route 1) at the corner of Darrah Lane.
