Viewfinder: Red, White & Bang Kid's Triathlon
The second annual event raised funds for next year's Lawrence Township 4th of July fireworks show.
Lawrence Township’s second annual "” – held on Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 5) at the Lawrenceville Swim Association on Craven Lane – was a tremendous success.
Steve Groeger, superintendent of the township’s recreation department, said 116 of the 118 children who registered for the event took part, and all finished the race.
While the recreation department is still waiting on some bills and sponsorship money to come it, Groeger said “it looks like we will net about $3,000.”

That money will be used to help fund the township's 4th of July fireworks show next year. The 2010 triathlon raised about $1,600, which went to support this year’s .
Helping to make the triathlon a success, Groeger said, were about 75 parents of race participants and volunteers from the township’s Recreation Advisory Committee and Lawrenceville Swim Association.

“The triathlon was very well attended and it’s my understanding we made a few thousand dollars toward the fireworks,’ said Mayor Greg Puliti, who was among those who helped out on Monday. “I’d like to thank all the volunteers and the participants for making it a wonderful event.”
It cost $25 to register for the triathlon and each participant received a T-shirt bearing the names of race sponsors.
There were three age brackets for the triathlon: 6-9 years old; 10-12 years old; and 13-15 years old. Participants in all three age brackets ran, swam and biked.
The youngest competitors ran seven-tenths (0.7) of a mile, while the two older age groups each ran 1½ miles.
The 6- to 9-year-olds swam 50 meters in the LSA pool; the 10- to 12-year-olds swam 100 meters; and the 13- to 15-year-olds swam 200 meters.
And all participants completed a 2-mile bike ride from Craven Lane to Village Park and back to the starting point.
In the 6- to 9-years-old age group, 9-year-old Robbie Lynch had the best time among the boys at 17:01.28, while 9-year-old Olivia Koch had the best time for the girls at 19:34.44.
In the 10- to 12-years-old group, Hutch Collins, 11, had the best time for the boys at 22:31.64, while Kayla Krisak, 12, had the best time among the girls at 24:18.76.
And in the 13- to 15-years-old group, Nathaniel Lecompte, 13, completed the race in 24:54.70 to lead the boys, while Maeve Humphreys, 14, finished the triathlon in 24:55.12 to lead the girls.
