Editor's Note: The following is a press release issues by the Lawrence Township Education Foundation.

Representatives from Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and the Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTEF) recently visited the Lawrence Intermediate School (LIS) to see first-hand two projects that are underway at the school.

Peg Forrestal, Director of Contributions and Community Affairs at Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Paul Schindel, Board President, LTEF, were delighted to see the outdoor garden and classroom project that began in the Fall of 2010 and has bloomed into a space used by hundreds of students in the school.  It includes a vegetable and herb garden complete with a sundial, composting bin, and rain barrel.  Through tending the garden, students learn about science and the environment. The outdoor learning space is just one of the projects funded by Janssen Pharmaceuticals through LTEF.

Also new at LIS are microscopes for the 5th grade classes.  These microscopes enhance the current science curriculum by providing students equipment view into the world unseen by the naked eye.  Mrs. Alice Keffer and her students explained to the visitors the types of things that they saw under the microscopes and what a difference it made to their lessons.   The microscopes were also funded by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

“The generous support of Janssen Pharmaceuticals has provided unique and enriching educational experiences to students in Lawrence Township,” stated Paul Schindel.  “LTEF seeks out corporations and area businesses to match funding to the teacher initiated grants to create an exceptional learning environment.”
