5 Things You Need to Know About This Weekend

The township's 2011 Relay for Life, a walk to raise awareness about mental illness, a used electronics cleanup, a class car show and a rain barrel workshop are among the events taking place in and around Lawrence Township this weekend.

Friday, May 20 – 2011 Lawrence Township Relay for Life

The Lawrence Township 2011 Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society will be held on the Lawrence High School campus at 2525 Princeton Pike  on May 20 from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Click here to register for the event. Saturday, May 21 – National Alliance on Mental Illness Walk

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Mercer, in conjunction with Lawrenceville Main Street, will participate in the fourth state-wide NAMI Walk to combat the stigma of mental illness and improve the lives of families affected by it.

The 5K walk will be held on Saturday, May 21 at Rider University, 2083 Lawrence Rd. (Route 206). Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., followed by the walk at 10 a.m. There will be community activities until 3 p.m., including a complimentary picnic lunch, music by local bands, games on the field, and a mini-marketplace. Anyone wishing to register for the walk, form a team, become a sponsor or make a donation should visit the website www.namimercer.org or call (609) 799-8994. NAMI Mercer is an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Saturday, May 21 – Used Electronic Waste Cleanup & Shredding Collection Event

The Mercer County Improvement Authority will host a Used Electronic Waste and Shredding Collection Event from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on May 21, rain or shine, in the parking lot of the Sun National Bank Center at 80 Hamilton Ave., near Route 129, in Trenton.  Mercer County residents can – free of charge – dispose of old cameras, computers, copiers, fax machines, microwave ovens, phones, printers, stereos, televisions, VCRs and more. Up to eight boxes or bags of paper per person may also be dropped off for shredding. See the flyer in the PDF box above for more details. Proof of county residency (driver's license) must be shown.

Saturday, May 21 – Classic Car Show

The American Legion Riders of American Legion Post 414 will host a Motorcycle, Hot Rod and Classic Car Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 21 in , located at the end of Oaklyn Terrace. A $5 donation is requested, which will benefit the Veterans Haven transitional housing program for Homeless Veterans. May 22 has been set as the rain date.

Collecting rain water for use in watering lawns and plants can save you money. Sustainable Lawrence, in cooperation with the Lawrence Nature Center, will hold a class this Saturday (May 21) during which participants will learn how to build their own rain barrels. Registration is required and there is a $50 fee, which covers the cost of all materials. The class will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lawrence Nature Center at 481 Drexel Ave. To register for the class call Tahirih Smith at (609) 731-1818. Payment of the $50 fee can be done in person Saturday with a personal check or cash.
