THE BEARS ARE BACK

On several nights in December 2013 we have heard bears calling in the area of the Elementary school and the upper streets (Bergen upper Phillips & Gordon). A neighbor reported this to the police on one occasion when the bears' screechy growls were extremely loud. We contacted Animal Control and they said the police had no record of such a call. Don't know what's up with that, we thought the police keep records of all reports. Nevertheless, just be aware that the bears are here in the village and they are most active after dark and up to early morning hours. We have lived here since 1951 and can assure you all that black bears are not cute furry friends. They are territorial, very wily, and will attack if cornered or annoyed during mating season (late Aug. & throughout early winter). So when you walk your dog or go out to jog or bike, keep an eye out.
